A family calling

Mariona is the daughter of Rosa Comellas, co-founder in 1983 of the New Look salon in Barcelona. Hairdressing runs in the family: "con tres añitos ya me hacía mechas" ("she was already giving me highlights when I was three"), Mariona recalls about her mother. She's grateful, beyond the craft itself, "haberme enseñado a tener paciencia y a controlar mi carácter" ("for teaching me patience and how to manage my temper"). Her mother, in turn, feels "muy orgullosa y contenta" ("very proud and happy") that Mariona followed in her footsteps in a profession that, she admits, her daughter "se le da mucho mejor" ("is much better at") than she is herself — though color, they both agree, is still mum's territory.

Background

Before founding alegra, Mariona spent years training and working at another Barcelona salon, New Look, where she was a stylist and brand-image manager. A long career, across different beauty salons, honing her craft over the years before deciding to strike out on her own.

alegra, her own project

alegra is, in the words of its founder, "la culminación de toda una vida dedicada a este arte" ("the culmination of a lifetime dedicated to this craft"). A 340m² space at Calaf 24-26, designed for pause and attention to detail, where hairdressing, color, head spa and beauty coexist under one same principle: less is more.

Collaborations and institutions

alegra is the official collaborating hair salon of Premis Gaudí, the Catalan Film Academy's awards, and the official hair salon of the People in Red Barcelona Charity Gala, a fundraising event supporting biomedical research. In June 2026, Mariona co-created a suite bathroom together with interior designer Cristina Carulla for Ecléctica Barcelona, a design showcase covered by several outlets including Nuevo Estilo, which described her as "la estilista Mariona Ferrán, fundadora de Alegra" ("stylist Mariona Ferrán, founder of Alegra").
